They tend to be either too simple or too complex, especially for a beginner. This book sort of bridges the gap. I have also bought Practical Protein Crystallography by Duncan McRee and I feel both these books are a good start for beginners. I wish I had bought this one sooner.

Volume I is dedicated to crystallization and ways to increase the odds of obtaining crystals in macromolecules.
